Capture Awards at 2015 CNY Scholastic Art Competition

Oswego High School Art Students captured over 40 awards recently at the annual Central New York Scholastic Art Competition. Several students were recognized for their artwork at an awards ceremony held on the Onondaga Community College campus in Syracuse.

According to Oswego High School Art Teacher Melissa Martin, over 90 school districts participated in this year’s competition, and included over 4,000 student entries.

“I am extremely proud of our very talented Oswego High School artists,” said Martin. “Our students proved once again that they can compete with the very best.”

“These recognitions have become a standard within our Oswego High School Art Department, and a tradition of excellence that our students are always striving for with their artwork,” she added.

The Oswego High School students’ recognitions included top awards in drawing and illustration, design, painting, sculpture, and ceramics.

The Gold Key Award winners accepted their awards at the ceremony at Onondaga Community College, and their work will now be considered for awards at the national level, according to Martin.

Oswego High School Individual Gold Key winners included: Brenna Riley for “Snaggletooth” in the Drawing & Illustration category; Christian Jasewicz for “Peacock” in the Design category; Reilly Patrick for “Adagio” in Drawing & Illustration; Brenna Riley for “Tangle” in Design; Brenna Riley for “Gypsy” in Drawing & Illustration; Michael Cali for “Spider and Insect Autons” in Sculpture; Kayla Volkomer for “Don’t Lose Yourself in Your Fear” in Design; Kelsey Wilder for “Kiwi Spirit” in Ceramics and Glass; and Brenna Riley for “Weightless” in Drawing & Illustration.

Michael Cali’s “Spider and Insect Autons” also won an award for “Best Craftmanship” for his sculpture.

 Silver Key Portfolio Award recipients included: Brenna Riley, Kayla Volkomer, and Mike Edwards.

Individual Silver Key Award winners included: Meghan Anderson for “The World Outside the Window” and “Blue” in Drawing & Illustration; Brenna Riley for “Face of Death” in Drawing & Illustration and “Courtly Check” in Painting; Kayla Volkomer for “Reflections” in Painting; Alexander Bush for “Industrious Teapot” in Ceramics & Glass; Lauren Boshart for “Blue Winter Deer” in Design; Katie Bradshaw for “Crazy Candy Lady” in Drawing & Illustration; Sydney Copeland for “Woodland Princess” in Drawing & Illustration; Mike Edwards for “Self Portrait” in Design;  Matthew Olszewski for “Horse Hair Set” in Ceramics & Glass; Allie Henderson for “Harry Potter Playing Cards” in Design;  Allie Henderson for “Carousel” in Photography; Alexander Bush for “Spirit Eagle” in Sculpture; Dain Jerred for “Mechanical Grasshopper” in Design; Reilly Patrick for “Child’s Play” in Drawing & Illustration; and Brenna Sherman for “Elephant” in Design.

Honorable Mention Portfolio Award winners included: Allie Henderson, Makayla Carson, and Shea Hewitt.

Individual Honorable Mention winners included: Brianna Hill for “Boil” and “Seahorses” in Design; Makayla Carson for “Mask” in Drawing & Illustration and “Brush” in Design; Christian Jasewicz for “Descend” in Design; Katie O’Gorman for “Acid Cat” in Design; Maddy Rahn for “Teapot” in Ceramics & Glass; Allie Henderson for “Roses” in Drawing & Illustration and “Release” in Design.
