Write a commentThe Oswego County Legislature approved a countywide economic study recently. Known as the Strategic Economic Advancement Plan, the study will benchmark programs and outcomes and compare Oswego County to other communities using economic development best practices around the US and beyond.
Camoin Associates, based in Saratoga Springs, was chosen, from several candidates, to conduct the study. Camoin is a full service economic development firm with experience in a variety of communities that share the same target industries as Oswego County, as well as similar demographics. According to their website, Camoin Associates is "committed to creating data-drive strategies, policies and programs while forging collaborative relationships and building trust among key shareholders." They have a national reputation for "detailed, place-specific and accurate analysis" that results in "informed decision-making and action."
"This plan will enable us to determine what is working and to identify where improvements can be made in programs, collaboration, and outcomes," said L. Michael Treadwell, executive director for Operation Oswego County. "This will also be an essential step toward addressing deficiencies in our infrastructure that are significant impediments to economic development, as well as to the basic quality of life for our citizens."
Expectations from the study include a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of existing infrastructure, along with a thorough analysis of the County's demographic data. One particular area of focus will be on the impact of the closing of a nuclear power plant and how best to prepare for it.
To engage the community in the planning process, Camoin will facilitate a series of community stakeholder meetings. Information will be forthcoming as to when and where these meetings will be held.
The County Legislature and the County of Oswego IDA are partnering on this economic development initiative and are sharing the costs associated with Camoin Associates.
