The Oswego County Office for the Aging (OFA) highlights upcoming events that raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and provides support for caregivers.
“We invite everyone impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, whether they’re living with the conditions or caring for a loved one who is, to come out and join us at our events this month,” said Oswego County OFA Director Sara Sunday. “Our annual awareness walk honors the strength, resilience and spirit of those living with these diseases, while our wellness conference offers caregivers valuable support, resources and a chance to recharge.
“We also encourage residents to wear purple, the signature color of Alzheimer’s awareness, as a visible expression of love, support and solidarity for those affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia,” she added.
The Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Wellness Conference is held by the Office for the Aging in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and Ne-Taba Taekwondo Yoga. The free event takes place on Monday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at J&J Scriba Venue, 3472 Co. Rte. 176, Scriba.
Participants will gain tools necessary for their caregiving journey while enjoying a day of self-care. The event includes a presentation about building good habits for brain health, a caregiver binder workshop to ensure they have access to the resources and support they need, and a gentle yoga session by Ne-Taba Taekwondo Yoga. A complementary lunch will be provided.
Registration for the conference is required, as space is limited. To reserve your space, click on Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Wellness Conference.
The “I Will Remember for You” Alzheimer’s awareness walk begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 18 at the Oswego Farmers’ Market on West First Street. A brief greeting and remarks will be given at 5 p.m., followed by a group photo. At 5:20 p.m., participants will walk the “Healthy Mile” across bridges on Bridge and Utica streets.
The meeting spot will be marked with purple balloons. The event will be held rain or shine. It will only be canceled if the Oswego Farmers’ Market is also called off.
