Write a commentJust before 3pm today, The Oswego Fire Department was alerted to a fire at the Oswego County Transfer Station located at 700 East Seneca Street in the City of Oswego.
Oswego Firefighters arrived shortly after and confirmed a working fire in a tractor trailer, hopper, and walls of the facility. The alarm assignment was quickly upgraded to bring additional resources to the scene, including the help of several area fire departments.
County Transfer Station staff members were able to quickly and safely move the tractor trailer from under the hopper and dump the burning trash on the ground for extinguishment. Simultaneously, Firefighters made entry in the front of the facility with hose lines to extinguish the fire in the walls. Fire crews spent the next 90 minutes overhauling areas to expose hidden pockets of fires. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. All crews were back in service before 6pm.
The Oswego Fire Department was assisted at the scene by personnel from the Oswego Police Department, Oswego DPW, Oswego County Fire Coordinators Office, Oswego County Transfer Station, Fulton Fire Department, Novelis Fire Department, Minetto Fire Department, Scriba Fire Department, Menter Ambulance, and National Grid. The Oswego Town Volunteer Fire Department assisted by covering city calls during the incident.
Fire Chief Paul Conzone commended the coordinated response of all personnel involved. “Our Firefighters did an excellent job bringing this fire under control and working together to limit damage. We are also extremely appreciative of our mutual aid partners who responded and assisted our crews. Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of strong working relationships among our local fire departments and emergency response agencies.”
