Write a commentToday, U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) announced that nearly $30 million in funds from the U.S. Department of Education will be distributed.
The funds will be distributed to Cayuga Community College, the Cayuga – Onondaga BOCES, Le Moyne College, Onondaga Community College, the Oswego County BOCES, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Upstate Medical University, SUNY College of Environment Science & Forestry, Syracuse University, the Wayne – Finger Lakes BOCES and Wells College. These awardsinclude nearly $15 million in emergency financial assistance to college students whose lives and educations have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding is available through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, legislation Rep. Katko supported in the House.
“Today, I am pleased to announce that as a result of the recently passed Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, nearly $30 million in federal funding will be distributed to Central New York colleges and universities to support students in our region,” said Rep. Katko. “Across Central New York, the COVID-19 pandemic has upended educational opportunities for thousands of students, creating significant financial hardships and suspending in-person classes and routine campus activities. While the resilience of our students and educators is unquestioned, resources provided under the CARES Act will provide essential support to students, colleges, and universities as they navigate the unique challenges facing higher education as a result of COVID-19.”
