A project now underway has brought together SUNY Oswego students from Dr. Minjung Seo’s Health Promotion Program Planning class with residents at St. Francis Commons Assisted Living Residence.

Students got the project underway recently by interviewing residents at St. Francis Commons as part of a multi-semester class project that focuses on the development and implementation of evidence-based health promotion programs designed specifically for older adults.

The project included an initial market analysis to identify needs in the area of health and wellness at the assisted living residence, fall semester students conducted interviews with residents. Students will then return next semester to present their health promotion program (website) specifically tailored for St. Francis Commons residents. Students will illustrate their media campaigns and introduce some interactive activities with the seniors, which is a part of their intervention programs. Next semester students will return to St. Francis Commons and begin to implement health programs, which they developed using the responses they receive from residents.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop intergenerational relationships with seniors as well as gain hands on experience of putting their core knowledge in health promotion into practice,” said Dr. Seo.

“We have established a productive relationship with SUNY Oswego and we welcome any opportunity that brings our residents together with students,” said St. Francis Commons Director Julie Chetney. “This project represents the best of collaboration; students will learn how to assess population health needs and then implement evidence-based health promotion programs with our residents; and our residents will benefit from programs designed specifically to enhance their health and well-being.”
