College Life

     A comic spoof on the legend of Frankenstein comes to life this month as SUNY Oswego`s theatre and music departments present an adaptation based on the 1974 hit film and 2007 Broadway play `Young Frankenstein` in Tyler Hall`s Waterman Theatre. The play will preview at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, and run 7:30 p.m. April 25 and 26 and May 3, with the matinee finale at 2 p.m. May 4.

     More than 60 colleges and universities will have displays and representatives on hand to talk with prospective students and their families from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Oswego County`s first College Fair. The event, organized by the Oswego County Counselors Association in conjunction with SUNY Oswego, will take place in the arena and convocation hall of SUNY Oswego`s Campus Center.

     SUNY Oswego earth sciences faculty member and paleontologist Diana Boyer has received a three-year, $52,000 National Science Foundation grant to advance understanding of a mass extinction whose evidence lies in ancient layers of black shale in Western New York and Eastern Ohio.

     Dr. Barry A. Friedman, professor of management in SUNY Oswego`s School of Business and author of more than 35 peer-reviewed articles on topics as diverse as corporate reputation and parents` school satisfaction, is this year`s recipient of the college President`s Award for Scholarly and Creative Activity. The college Provost`s Award for Scholarly and Creative Activity, recognizing research excellence within the recipient`s first six years at the college, goes to another School of Business faculty member, Dr. Hong Wan, assistant professor of accounting.

     University Police at SUNY Oswego will have special patrols out looking for motorists who are not wearing their seatbelts from April 21 to May 4.

     Metropolitan Opera bass-baritone Philip Cokorinos, a 1979 alumnus of SUNY Oswego, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, in the college`s Sheldon Hall ballroom as the season finale of the Ke-Nekt Chamber Music Series.

     SUNY Oswego`s State Singers and College Choir will present a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 103 W. Seventh St. in Oswego. Under the direction of Dr. Mihoko Tsutsumi, the college`s director of choral activities, the groups will offer a wide variety of vocal music, from opera to spiritual, from musical theatre to a Brahms classic.

     SUNY Oswego`s spring Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts exhibitions will open Friday, May 2, with a free public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in Tyler Art Gallery.

     The Oswego County Counselors Association (OsCCA) in conjunction with SUNY Oswego is pleased to debut an evening college fair this spring. This event will be the first of its kind at SUNY Oswego, and will be held at the beautiful Campus Center on Monday, April 28, 2014 from 6-8 PM.
