The Oswego State wrestling team opens its season in fourth place with 39 points after the first day of the Ithaca College Invitational on Friday. With 16 schools participating, Oswego trails Johnson & Wales, Springfield and Stevens Institute of Technology.
Fourteen Laker wrestlers scored points for Oswego. Hunter Howland led the team, scoring 4.5 points on the first day of competition. The Oswego native won by a major decision over his SUNY Sullivan opponent in round one, and won by a technical fall in round with a score of 26-7 to defeat his New England College foe.
Anthony Sountis and Kyle Torre each scored four points for the Lakers after receiving first round byes. Sountis, in his first competition as a Laker, recorded a fall in 5:55 while teammate Torre scored a fall in 3:56.
All three Lakers in the 141 weight class put up points for Oswego. Like Sountis, Evan Corso and Bryan Coll started the afternoon with a bye. In round two, Corso won by a technical fall, while Coll was victorious with an 8-3 decision.
Oswego returns to the mats at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning for the final day of the Ithaca College Invitational.
