Men's Basketball Drops A Close Contest to SLU

Men's Basketball Drops A Close Contest to SLU

The Oswego State men's basketball team won its fourth-straight game convincingly 98-69 over visiting New Paltz on Saturday afternoon in Max Ziel Gymnasium. With the victory, the Lakers are now 9-3 overall and 5-1 in SUNYAC action while the Hawks drop to 1-10, 0-6.

After St. Lawrence started off the game on a 7-2 run, Oswego climbed back into it with a 13-6 spurt over 3:44 of the first. The surge was anchored by Ian Schupp, who tallied seven points. He finished with 12 points, two rebounds and an assist.

Despite the early run, Oswego was plagued by poor shooting. It managed just 38.8% (14-or-36) in the first half and started the second 3-for-13 (23.0%). The Saints took advantage of a small Laker lineup and collected eight more boards and won the second-chance points battle by 10.

Brian Sortino and Jamir Ferebee put forth a tremendous effort in an attempt to spark the Laker fire. The two players combined for 13 of Oswego's 15 points during the midsection of the second half. Sortino ended up with 14 points, four assists and one rebound, while Ferebee tallied a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds.

The two guards were able to get Oswego within five points, before a Keith Tyson layup cut the opposing lead to three as part of an 11-4 run. It would not be enough though, as the Saints held on.

Tyler Pierre played a majority of the game at center and pulled down a Laker career-high 12 boards, including five on the offensive glass.

Men's basketball returns to action at 5:30 p.m. on Friday for a conference contest against the Plattsburgh Cardinals.
