The Oswego State wrestling team dropped its first two matches and finished the day with a victory on Friday afternoon in Williamsport, Pa. for the two-day Budd Whitehill Division III Duals. Oswego is currently in 3th place going into the second day of duals.
The squad was defeated in the first match 30-12 against Thiel College. Scott Bova stood out against Thiel in the 184 weight division. The Poughquay native registered three points for Oswego, winning in a 6-1 decision. David Almaviva also won in a tough 2-1 decision against his Tomcat opponent in the 141-pound weight class giving Oswego three more points. Oswego also received another six points in a forfeit in the 125-pound division.
In the second match, Oswego fell 35-3 to No.30 College of New Jersey. Senior Bova rose to the occasion again by defeating his opponent in a major decision (6-0). The victory notched Oswego's sole three points of the match. Sophomore Joe Gorsuch fell just short to the Lion's Sigala Fosam in a 3-2 decision.
Oswego finished the day on a strong note with a 42-3 victory over Trine University. James Ronca sparked the team defeating Trine's David Moore in the 125-pound weight class. The junior had control throughout the entire bout, leading him to an 11-3 major decision. Almaviva and Tyler Silverthorn won their duals by technical fall, earning five points each. Junior Abubakarr Sow pinned his Thunder opponent at just 3:22 adding six points for Oswego. The Lakers' Mark Milisci and Dillon Hudson each tallied three points from their wins by decision of 4-3 and 3-2, respectively. At the conclusion of the dual, the squad had won 9 of the 10 weight classes.
Wrestling will be back in action for day two of the Budd Whitehill National Duals at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
