The Oswego State women`s track and field team competed at the Cortland Classic on Friday and Saturday. With the field events leading the way last week for the Laker women, it was the distance squad`s turn to take the spotlight and under Friday night lights, they did not disappoint.
Sarah Popovitch started the meet with an impressive sixth place finish in the 1,500. The junior's time of 4:56.88 was a lifetime best by nearly five seconds. Sophomore Karlee Duffer even split the 10,000 to close out Friday night for the team, cruising to a third place finish with a time of 42:12.64 in her first race ever at that distance. Junior Brittany Lamie, also racing the 10,000, came in fifth, with an 18-second career best of 42:54.17.
Senior Mallory Eckert led the way in the field events, taking first on Friday afternoon in the javelin. Her throw of 31.54 m (103'6") improved her standing atop the SUNYAC leader board. On Saturday, she came back to take ninth in the discus with a lifetime best toss of 30.02 meters. However, it was Marissa Pariseau who stole the show on Saturday, with an impressive win in the 400, taking the event in a school-record setting performance of 58.14 seconds.
On Thursday, Oswego State will send their record breaking 4x400-meter relay and 4x200-meter relay down to Philadelphia to participate in the prestigious Penn Relays. The rest of the team will compete in its last tune up of the regular season on Saturday at the Rochester Spring Invitational hosted by University of Rochester.
