Women's Basketball Gives Undefeated No. 23 Geneseo a Scare

The Oswego State women's basketball team had undefeated and nationally-ranked Geneseo on its heels before dropping a 62-48 contest on Saturday evening on Saturday. With the hard-fought loss, the Lakers fall to 5-14 overall and 2-10 in the conference while the Knights stay perfect at 20-0, 13-0.

Trailing Geneseo by six points with just over a minute left in the first quarter, Oswego turned on the pressure. The Lakers outscored the Knights 19-11 from that point forward in the remainder of the half, possessing a two-point lead headed to the locker room. Geneseo came out of the break and showed why it sits atop the SUNYAC standings with an 18-8 third quarter to regain control. The Knights added six-more points to its margin in the final 10 minutes to spoil the Lakers' upset bid.

Seniors Alison Nunziato and Mary Mazzella and similar outings, both pacing the Lakers with 12 points each. Nunziato was 5-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-4 from distance, to go along with four rebounds. Mazzella was 4-for-7 from the field, 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe for her 12 points. The guard also had a team-high four assists to coincide with three rebounds.
Courtney Ameele led the way on the glass, collecting a game-high tying nine boards, setting her new season-high in the process.

All eight Lakers that earned playing time on Saturday recorded points, rounded out by Heather Hebert (6), Morgan Jordal (6), Ameele (4), Zana Dillard (3), Quincey Zimmerman (3) and Rachael Windhausen (2).

The Lakers were able to swat five shots in the tilt, three of which came from Jordal while Windhausen and Dillard added one apiece.

Oswego will return to the hardwood at 7:30 p.m. on Friday when it hosts Potsdam in league action.
