The Oswego State field hockey team picked up its third-straight win 1-0 over Wells College on a soggy Saturday afternoon at the South Athletic Field. With the win, Oswego improves to 6-7 on the year while the Express drops to 0-13.
Saturday's game was dedicated to raising awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. Senior captain Courtney Collins organized the event in honor of her mother, Anne, who suffers from the disease. Anne, an Oswego State alumna, played multiples sports for the Lakers during her career and was inducted to the College's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. The team wore orange socks and warm-up t-shirts as it is the color that brings awareness to MS.
After playing a scoreless first half in which Oswego outshot Wells 6-0, the Lakers got all it would need in the second period. Just under 10 minutes into the half, Julia Calandra sent a pass through the circle towards the right post, where Grace Rinaldi received the entry for an easy tap-in score.
Wells was able to apply pressure in the final minute but the Lakers' defense and goaltending prevailed. The Express' Nicole Sales sent a shot that was blocked by an Oswego defender before Cat Taylor collected the rebound. Taylor fired a shot but Laker goalie Sarita Charap made a diving save, her only stop of the day, to preserve the lead.
Oswego held a large margin in shots over Wells (19-2), paced by Lisa O'Callaghan's seven attempts. Collins, Rinaldi and Cassie Langone each took two shots as well.
The Lakers will return to the field at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Cortland to face the nationally-ranked Red Dragons.
