Oswego Scores Seven to Complete Weekend Sweep

OS Hockey

The No. 4/4 Oswego State men's ice hockey team completed a SUNYAC weekend sweep with a 7-1 victory over Fredonia on Saturday night at the Marano Campus Center Arena. Oswego's win pushes its record to 12-2-3 overall and 7-1-1 in conference action while the Blue Devils drop to 4-8-5, 0-5-3.

In the first period, the Lakers notched two unanswered goals, starting with one at 10:04. Chris Raguseocleared the puck from behind his own net to Josh Timpano. The sophomore carried the puck all the way to the Fredonia goal, ripping a shot that goalie Jeff Flagler kicked away. Flagler's leg save did not get far from the crease before Chris Waterstreet swooped in and netted the rebound goal.

Over eight minutes later, Oswego was back at it, this time with a goal from Shawn Hulshof. It would be one of two goals from the sophomore on the night, with assists going to Alex Botten and Mike Wills.

Heading into the middle period, the Lakers did not let off the gas, pumping three more scores for a 5-0 advantage. The first goal of the second stanza came from Timpano for his second point of the night and first goal of the 2014-15 campaign. Andrew Barton sent a pass from the corner to just inside the blue line to Mac Scott. Scott fired an attempt in on net and Barton deflected the shot up and over the goalie's should for the tally.

The prettiest goal of the night came on the Lakers' fourth goal from Raguseo. Hulshof sent a pass out toMike Montagna who found Raguseo sitting at the blue line. The defenseman did his best forward impression, using two dekes to beat his defender and slicing a backhand past Flagler for his fourth of the season.

Oswego's last goal of the second came at 13:41 when Mitchell Herlihey kept the puck from exiting the offensive zone, passing to Raguseo. The Pickering, Ont. native drilled the puck near the right post, where a waiting Hulshof punched it home.

The Lakers added two more goals in the third, just 45 seconds apart. At 14:08, Neil put one in the back of the net from Hulshof and Matt Galati. Just moments later, Brandon Adams got in on the scoring party, blasting a shot over the goalie's left shoulder. Waterstreet and Stephen Johnson were both credited with assists on the seventh and final Laker goal.

Matt Zawadzki nearly achieved his second-straight shutout in as many days, allowing just one late goal with 3:19 to play. To that point, the Fort Mill, S.C. native had blanked his opponents on Friday and Saturday for 116:41. He finished Saturday's victory with 29 saves.

Team stats were pretty even on the night, with Oswego holding slight edges in shots-on-goal (34-30) and faceoffs (36-30). Both squads were also 1-for-3 on the power-play.

The Lakers will take their two-game win streak into Easton, Mass. to face Stonehill College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
