Oswego`s Strong First Half Not Enough Against No. 2 Cortland

OS Lacross The Oswego State women`s lacrosse team played No. 2 Cortland tough throughout the first half before the Red Dragons prevailed with an 11-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Laker Soccer Field. With the loss, Oswego falls to 5-3 on the year and 0-2 in the conference while Cortland improves to 9-0, 3-0.

It was also the Lakers' Senior Day, as the team honored its 11 members of the class of 2014.

Cortland was able to but a tally on the board but Oswego would not shy away from the challenge, getting back-to-back goals from its senior class. Mackenzie Kjerstad knotted the game at 1-1 with a free-position goal at 18:36. Classmate Brittany Koelmel was at it just 2:50 later as she gave Oswego a 2-1 edge on the Red Dragons.

With 7:01 to play in the first half, Cortland evened the game at 2-2 on a free-position of its own. Esther Gabriel gave the Lakers a lead once again, however, scoring her 14th of the season with a goal at 4:24. The Red Dragons were able to deadlock the contest at 3-3 heading to the half.

In the final 30 minutes it was all nationally-ranked Cortland as the Red Dragons scored eight unanswered goals in the period.

Nikki Greco, Oswego's senior in net, kept her consistency between the pipes, stopping better than 50.0% of the shots she faced, finishing with 13 saves.

The Lakers will look to end its short two-game skid at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Buffalo State in another SUNYAC matchup.
