Second Half Surge Not Enough in Women's Lax Opener

Second Half Surge Not Enough in Women's Lax Opener

The Oswego State women's lacrosse team opened the 2017 campaign with a 10-6 loss to Clarkson University (2-1) on Tuesday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium.

Clarkson got off to a hot start, recording the game's first four goals just 9:02 into the tilt. Oswego scored two first-half goals, both coming on assists from Teresa Shattuck to freshman Montana Garrett, to trail 6-2 at the break.

The Lakers started the second half in better fashion, notching three of the stanza's first four goals. Shattuck was in on all three scores, tallying the first unassisted at 20:22. Less than three minutes later, Toni Laneve scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from Shattuck. The Shattuck to Garrett connection was applied one more time at 17:08, cutting the Golden Knights' lead to just two at 7-5. Oswego seemed poised to cut the contest to one goal, but a score was wiped off due to a crease violation. Clarkson capitalized, stealing the momentum back with three-straight goals to lead 10-5.

Oswego's final goal came in a player-down situation when Laneve was able to find senior Kendall Appelbaum cutting for a score. The Appelbaum score came at 3:06 and proved to be the tilt's final tally.
Angela Ponto recorded the loss in net for Oswego, stopping six shots with 10 goals allowed.

The Lakers were solid on the clear all afternoon, converting 15-of-20 attempts, including a 9-for-10 showing in the second half. Oswego also grabbed one more ground ball than its opponent, scooping up 22 to Clarkson's 21. Shattuck, Garrett, Danielle Walker and Seanna Laneve each pick up three of those ground balls while Kelsey Henderson, Ponto and T. Laneve had two apiece.

The Golden Knights turned the ball over more than the Lakers, as Oswego had five less turnovers (23-18).

Oswego returns to action at 4 p.m. on Thursday when it hosts The Sage Colleges.
