Bailey Waterbury of the women's soccer team and Mike Naab of the men's soccer team have been named Oswego State's Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 13, 2013.
In a 1-1 week for the Lakers, Waterbury was instrumental in the 2-1 victory over Fredonia Saturday, Oct. 12.
After falling at home 1-0 to Buffalo State Friday night, Waterbury helped Oswego comeback from an early 1-0 deficit to the Blue Devils at Laker Soccer Field on Senior Day.
During the 28th minute, the sophomore prevented a defensive clear by Fredonia, settling the ball just inside the box and pumping an unassisted goal past the keeper. The goal knotted the score at 1-1 just 17 minutes after the Blue Devils took the advantage.
Just over eight minutes later, Waterbury did what she does best, assisting on a teammate's score. The Plattsburgh native found Tia Segretto at 36:50 as Segretto finished the connection with a goal. That goal would prevail as the game-winner as the teams played a scoreless second period.
Waterbury leads the team and the SUNYAC with six assists this season while Saturday's goal was her first of the year.
Oswego will return to action at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, when it continues conference play at The College at Brockport. The Lakers are currently 8-5 on the year and 3-3 in the SUNYAC which places them in fifth place with nine points.
In a 0-1-1 week for the Lakers, Mike Naab scored Oswego's only goal on the weekend.
After playing 72 minutes of scoreless soccer with Fredonia Saturday, Naab found the back of the net at 72:40 to give the Lakers a late advantage. The goal was Naab's fourth of the season which is good for the team lead. He is also in a five-way tie for the team-high in assists.
The lead did not hold for long, however, as Fredonia knotted the game just under seven minutes later. Neither team could break the stalemate through double overtime, allowing the game to end in a tie.
Naab and Oswego will return to action at 3 p.m. Friday when they welcome The College at Brockport for a conference matchup. The Friday and Saturday contests will be a Breast Cancer Awareness weekend, as Oswego will wear its pink attire.
