'Student Night' returns to kick off the Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 17. The Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego hosts the fifth annual event which continues through Sunday, April 19. Learn more about this chapter in history and hear behind-the-scenes stories about the campaign from an esteemed panel of multinational historians throughout the weekend.
The Oswego County Community Foundation (Oswego Foundation) recently achieved its $500,000 fundraising goal with the help of a $14,000 gift from Oswego native Eleanor Filburn and a $122,000 contribution from NBT Bank's charitable foundation. These gifts helped the Oswego Foundation secure a $200,000 matching grant jointly issued last year by the Central New York Community Foundation and the Richard S. Shineman Foundation.
Jennifer Emmons, Fort Ontario Curator, was a recent guest of club member Rev. George DeMass where she addressed attendees on matters related to Fort Ontario but specifically about a former Fort Ontario Army soldier named Ludwig Bemelmans. Mr. Bemelmans is most well known as the creator of "Madeline" of the Madeline children's book series. Bemelmans was stationed at the Fort during World War I, which was then the site for one of the largest Army hospitals in the northeast. Ms. Emmons has done extensive research on this Fort Ontario soldier, his life history and how he came to Oswego, going to become a author loved by many.
The staff of Oswego County Opportunities' Nutrition Services is asking Oswego County residents to join them in their annual March for Meals campaign by being a part of the many events that they will be hosting during the month of March.
When it comes to combating child abuse the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County (CAC) is constantly finding ways to improve its services and bring an end to this epidemic. Recently the agency utilized funds from the Shineman Foundation and the Jim and Julie Boeheim Foundation to provide two extensive training seminars for professionals that are involved in the investigation of child abuse cases.
