Michael C. Backus, of Mexico, was sworn in Tuesday, Jan. 1, as Oswego County Clerk at the Oswego County Court House, in Oswego.. At age 29, Backus is the youngest county clerk in New York State. Above, his brother, Ssgt. Robert P. Backus USMC, holds the Bible as Backus is sworn in by NYS Supreme Court Judge James McCarthy. Backus' wife, Andrea, proudly looks on as she holds their daughter, Madelyn.

It is not too late to sign up for a Digital Photography class this Saturday, Jan. 5, with professional photographer Jim Russell. Russell will discuss the various settings found in digital cameras, how to take a good photo and how to import photos from your digital camera onto your computer. Feel free to bring your camera.
Sheriff Reuel Todd of the Oswego County Sheriff's office is organizing the annual child safety program for the children of Oswego County. Kindergarten through fourth grade students in the Oswego County schools will receive age-appropriate safety manuals, which will be handed out through Sheriff Todd's Child Safety Program.
The Oz Roller Derby league will host a Recruitment Night at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, and at 11 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 6, for a number of roles in Oswego's fastest growing sport.
The Oswego Public Library will be closing early Monday, Dec. 31, at 5 p.m. and will be closed, New Year's Day. Our regular hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and 12-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. We will be closed Monday, Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Day.
Several county government offices are affected by a phone outage today, Dec. 27, at the Public Safety Center and Department of Motor Vehicles Office in Oswego this morning. People who are making incoming phone calls to those departments are receiving a busy signal. E-mail functions are not affected.
Verizon has been notified and is working to correct the problem.
A fast-pitch softball hitting/pitching clinic for girls will be held Sunday mornings from Jan. 6 through March 3 at the Oswego YMCA Armory.
