This bill ensures that individuals with a second-degree relative who has been diagnosed with breast cancer will have insurance coverage for physician-recommended mammograms, regardless of age. By increasing access to early detection, this bill strengthens New York’s commitment to proactive, preventive women’s healthcare.
“Too many families have experienced the devastating impact of breast cancer, and early detection can make all the difference,” said Senator Ryan. “This legislation removes unnecessary barriers to screenings for individuals who may be at higher risk because of their family history, helping ensure they can access care when they need it most. Expanding coverage for physician-recommended mammograms is a commonsense step that will save lives, improve outcomes, and give more New Yorkers peace of mind about their health.”
Breast cancer remains one of the most common forms of cancer, and early detection is key to improving outcomes. By expanding coverage to those with a familial risk, this bill provides individuals with the opportunity to detect cancer sooner and seek treatment earlier, ultimately saving lives.
This legislation passed the Senate on May 29. Senator Ryan is urging the Assembly to pass the legislation and send it to the Governor’s desk.
