Bob Ruggio (Member) and Matt Ruggio (Guest) overcame Brian Canale (Member) and John Lindsay (Guest) in a sudden death 6-hole playoff to win the 2017 Stone Creek Golf Club Member-Guest Tournament.
The inaugural three-day event kicked off with a practice round including optional stableford and a field of 22 teams within 4 flights. The 5 unique matches included (1)Captain and Mate, (2)Modified Alternate Shot, (3)Best Ball, (4)Combined Score Stableford, and (5)Total Score of Both Players. The winner of each flight advanced to the championship shootout on holes 1, 2, and 9 with sudden death extra holes for a tie.
Championship shootout field included - 1st Flight Winner – Bob Ruggio/Matt Ruggio, 2nd Flight Winner - Geno Knopp/Teddy Knopp, 3rd Flight Winner – Brian Canale/John Lindsay, and 4th Flight Winner – Jerry Arnold/Jason Arnold.
Hole #1 playoff finished square at even par by all four teams. Hole #2 John Lindsay bombed a drive just off the green with a chance for eagle. Matt Ruggio put a wedge close creating an opportunity for birdie. Canale and Lindsay settled for a tap in birdie. Bob Ruggio matched it dropping a birdie putt to put both teams into the lead and tied at -1. Both teams pared #9 and a two-team sudden death playoff ensued over 6 holes of par golf with a duo between the tight wedges of Matt Ruggio and hot putters by Brian Canale and John Lindsay. A large gallery followed the teams as darkness began to set in with a light sprinkle that changed the green conditions. Putts came up short for Canale and Lindsay on hole #1 settling for bogie. Leaving Ruggio/Ruggio with a putt for the win. Bob Ruggio made the par putt to secure the 2017 Stone Creek Member-Guest Championship.
