Captain Duo's Third Period Goals Send Lakers Past Potsdam

The No. 8/9 Oswego State women's ice hockey team rebounded from a setback on Friday to Potsdam with a 3-2 victory on Saturday at the Bears' Maxcy Ice Arena. With the triumph, the Lakers improve to 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the ECAC West while Potsdam falls to 11-7-1, 7-4-1.

Oswego never trailed in the contest, opening the scoring at 16:24 of the first period. The Lakers found the back of the net on a power-play after Potsdam was whistled for tripping. Kendall Appelbaum needed just 13 seconds of the extra-skater opportunity to capitalize with her team-high tying fourth power-play tally of the year. The senior was assisted by classmates Alli Ullrich and Alexa Aramburu.

After Potsdam mimicked the Lakers with a power-play goal of its own in the middle period, Oswego owned the final 20 minutes. It was the captain duo of Olivia Ellis and Ashley Lyman that took matters into their own hands in the final period, starting with Ellis. Just 1:27 into the period, Ellis notched the go-ahead goal unassisted. Lyman matched her teammate at 12:18 with an unassisted goal of her own that proved to be the game-winner. Potsdam made it interesting in the final minutes, pulling to within one with 67 seconds remaining in regulation. Despite the Bears electing for an extra skater by emptying their net for the final 48 seconds, Oswego held the home team without a shot in the waning moments.

Junior Mariah Madrigal picked up her 12th victory in net for Oswego on the year, stopping 23 shots. Oswego owned the shots-on goal category by a margin of seven, putting 32 attempts on target.

The Lakers will now wait until 7 p.m. on Friday when they travel to Elmira College to face the top-5 ranked Soaring Eagles in a two-game set.
