The Oswego State men's basketball team opened the 2017-18 campaign with a six-point, 75-69, loss to Hamilton College on the first day of the Elmira College Tournament. Both teams were in the others receiving votes section of D3hoops.com's preseason national rankings.
Senior Jamir Ferebee hit an impressive milestone with his fifth of 22 points on the afternoon. The guard reached 1,000 points in his collegiate career, two years of which he spent with College of Mount Saint Vincent before transferring to Oswego for his junior year. While with the Dolphins, Ferebee recorded 657 points and he now has 360 in a season and one game with the Lakers for a total of 1,017.
Ferebee led all scorers in the contest and was joined by sophomore Josh Ivey (10) and freshman Liam Sanborn(17) in double figures. Ivey's 10 points was part of a double-double as he also collected 10 caroms on the afternoon. The forward trailed only teammate Tyler Pierre on the boards, as the junior grabbed 15 off the glass. Pierre was just two points shy of a double-double and also filled the stat sheet with three assists, two steals and one block. Five of his 15 rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor to keep possession with the Lakers.
The game was close throughout with neither team holding a more than seven-point lead. Oswego held the only seven-point advantages over the 40 minutes, both coming just over the midway point of the second half. Hamilton was able to string together a 24-11 run over the final 8:45, however, resulting in the 75-69 final.
Oswego will face the host Soaring Eagles at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the consolation game. Elmira fell in the day's first game in an overtime thriller, 108-105, to Keystone College.
