The Oswego State women's soccer team defeated the Alfred University Saxons on Tuesday evening at the Laker Turf Stadium. The Lakers jump back ahead with their record improving to 2-1-1. Meanwhile, the Saxons suffer their first defeat of the season falling, to 4-1.
Two goals in the final 15:30 of the contest helped secure the victory for the Lakers after both teams were held scoreless for the first 74-plus minutes.
In the 75th minute, Audrey Burbidge found Emma Geyer in the middle of the field. The pass allowed Geyer to dribble into open space and beat the goalie with a laser in the upper-right corner of the net.
Following suit, Burbidge was again feeling generous as she tallied her second assist of the evening by sending a helper to Katie Schulz in the 89th minute. Schulz received the ball through several defenders from the aforementioned Burbidge and rocketed it in the goal.
Oswego's defense was a game-changing force as it was able to keep the ball away from its own goal throughout the contest and particularly in the second half. Melissa Siegfried stood tall between the posts and on help from her defenders only needed to make one save on the evening to earn the victory.
The Lakers will return to action this weekend as they host two teams from northern New York. Beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday they host the Clarkson Golden Knights and on Saturday, they will host the St. Lawrence Saints at 1 p.m. Both games will take place at Laker Soccer Field.
