The Oswego State women's basketball team made it two-straight victories and three out of its last four with an 93-75 win over Potsdam on Friday night in Max Ziel Gymnasium. With the triumph, the Lakers go to 8-14 on the year and 6-9 in SUNYAC action while the Bears drop to 1-20, 0-14.
Oswego's 93 points is the most scored during head coachTracy Bruno's eight-season tenure and the most since the Lakers defeated Buffalo State 101-74 on Feb. 17, 2007. The Lakers previous highest-point total in the past eight years came last season in a 91-43 rout of Cazenovia College on Dec. 13.
Much of the high scoring had to do with a pair of Laker guards recording career-highs in the point column.Alisha Jacobs went for a career- and game-best 28 points, going 8-for-18 (44.4%) from the field and 9-for-12 (75.0%) from the free-throw line. Fellow guard Mary Mazzella nearly tied her backcourt mate, recording 26 points on 8-for-12 (66.7%) shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Heather Hebert would not be out done on the night, notching her second-straight double-double on 13 points and 15 rebounds. Freshman Rachael Windhausen fell just one rebound shy of her own double-double, matching Hebert's 13 points to go along with nine boards.
The Lakers were efficient from the field all night, going 47.5% (29-for-61) from the floor, 36.8% (7-for-19) from distance and 66.7% (28-for-42) on freebies.
Oswego only trailed once in the game, and that was in the opening minutes. The squad showed resilience down the stretch, however, as Potsdam made it a four-point game at 68-64 with 5:36 remaining. Undaunted by the looming comeback, Oswego rattled off 25 points in the final minutes to secure the victory.
The Lakers will host Plattsburgh at 4 p.m. on Saturday in what proves to be a pivotal game for each team's postseason hopes.
Plattsburgh currently holds a half-game advantage on the Lakers in the loss column, with each team sitting with six conference wins. Also with six conference wins are the Blue Devils of Fredonia, but Oswego holds a half-game lead in the loss column on that foe. The SUNYAC Championship takes the league's top-six teams at regular season's end, and Plattsburgh, Oswego and Fredonia currently sit at six, seven and eight, respectively, with just a half-game separating each.
