The women's soccer team used a three-goal second period to comeback and defeat Utica College 3-2 in its home opener Friday night.
The Lakers dominated every facet of the game, out-shooting the Pioneers 21-11 and having 11 shots on-goal to Utica's six. Oswego also had more corner kick opportunities, edging the Pioneers 3-1.
Utica struck first, scoring on a goal from Sarah Southwell 10 minutes into the first half.
Oswego responded in the 56th minute on a goal from Tia Segretto (Memphis/Jordan-Elbridge) with an assist from Bri Dolan,(Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) tying the game at 1-1.
In the 70th minute, Bailey Waterbury (Liverpool/Liverpool) sent a pass to Nikki Liadka (Liverpool/Liverpool), who was able to beat the Pioneer defense to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Waterbury has assisted Liadka on four of her seven goals this season. Waterbury's total number of assists as of September 8th had her ranked 21st in the country by the NCAA.
Jill Keevil (Tully/Tully)added to the Oswego lead at 71:30 coming after a rebound from a Dolan shot that was saved, giving the senior her second assist of the contest.
Utica scored again at 78:37 with an unassisted goal from Alana Fitzpatrick. The Pioneers comeback ended there, making the final score 3-2 Oswego.
Emily Varonier got the win in her first action of the year, saving one shot after starting in the second half.
Oswego plays at home again at 1 p.m., Sunday, when it takes on Alfred State at Laker Field.
