The Oswego State wrestling team dropped its home-opening dual to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) by a close 22-18 margin that came down to the final bout. While Oswego falls to 1-0 on the year, Rochester improves to 2-0.
Oswego had its highlight of the dual in the penultimate weight class, heading in trailing the Tigers 19-13. Daniel Smith – the Lakers' 197-pounder – went to work to try and close the six-point disadvantage. The sophomore recorded a take down and two four-point nearfalls in the first period alone. Smith started on the bottom in period two and quickly escaped before notching another takedown to make it a 13-0 advantage. Starting at neutral for the final period, Smith easily took down his counterpart in just 18 seconds for the 15-0 technical fall. Smith's technical fall gave Oswego five team points, shrinking the RIT margin to one at 19-18 with only the heavyweight class remaining. Rochester's Sam Weinger was able to earn a 7-2 decision at 285-pounds, securing the Tiger victory.
The other Laker winner's on the day were Joey Bush at 149-pounds and 125-pounder Jack Del Duca. Bush defeated his opponent by major decision (8-0), using two takedowns, a two-point nearfall, an escape and a point for riding time to accumulate his eight points. Del Duca earned a 7-3 decision with two takedowns, two escapes and a point awarded for RIT stalling.
Oswego's other team points came from Jordan Bushey at 184-pounds as RIT had to forfeit the weight class.
In exhibition matches, Israel Segarra (141) and Nick Swanson each won by pin fall in 1:13 and 2:20, respectively.
Oswego returns to the mat at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20 for the 38th New York State Collegiate Championships, hosted by Cornell University.
