The Oswego State baseball team fell 9-6 at the hands of Plattsburgh in a 10-inning game on Saturday afternoon at Laker Baseball Field. All three of the contests between the Cardinals and Lakers in the weekend series went to extra frames. With the loss, Oswego drops to 19-10 overall and 10-8 in SUNYAC action while Plattsburgh moves to 12-21, 7-11.
Oswego controlled the game for the first seven innings, holding a lead throughout except for a brief half inning when the Cardinals knotted the score at 2-2. The Lakers answered the tie with two runs in the bottom of that same inning to reclaim an advantage at 4-2.
A Tom Curry double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Michael Mascari to give the Lakers a 5-2 edge that would last to the top of the ninth. Plattsburgh scored two runs early in the ninth to cut the Oswego lead to one at 5-4. With two outs and runners on second and third, a Cardinal tripled to left field to give his team its first lead of the game, 6-5.
Oswego answered with its back against the wall with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and no runners on base. Mascari started it with a walk and was pinch-ran for by John Rauseo. Curry came through yet again, this time with a single down the right field line to advance Rauseo to third. With runners on the corners, the pressure amounted in a Cardinal wild pitch, allowing Rauseo to take home and force extras.
The Plattsburgh offensive half of the 10th was too much for the Lakers to overcome, however, as the Cardinals put up three runs to secure the win.
On Senior Day, Curry finished 3-for-5 with two doubles to lead Oswego at the plate. Fellow seniors Mascai, Kyle Liner,Mike McMullen and Tyler Baker all finished with two hits. Curry led the Lakers with two RBI while Mascari, McMullen and Baker each drove in one.
Seniors Dan Karleski, Scott Buniak and Tim Smith all had one hit apiece with Buniak and Smith scoring one run each.
On the mound, Ryan Brinkman, another member of the class of 2014, earned a no-decision in a solid 7.2 innings of work. Brinkman allowed just five hits and two runs, both of which were unearned, while striking out two.
Oswego will look to bounce back into the win column at 2 p.m. on Tuesday when it hosts Rochester Institute of Technology in a doubleheader.
