Troy Seymour of the Oswego State wrestling team will compete in the NCAA Division III Championships at 11 a.m. on Friday in Cleveland, Ohio. Seymour will be one of 180 competitors participating in the championship, which is hosted at the Cleveland Public Auditorium by Baldwin Wallace University.
Seymour earned the honor with a third-place finish at the NCAA Mideast Regionals in Ithaca, N.Y. on Feb. 25. The top three wrestlers of each weight class from the six NCAA regional tournaments advance to the national championships. Seymour will compete unseeded against 17 other wrestlers in the 174-pound weight class, opening the day against Jake Voss of Coe College, who is seeded sixth. Both wrestlers rank in the top-10 of the NCAA individual rankings, with Voss ranking fifth and Seymour ranking ninth.
The junior’s two wins at the regional competition came from victories against wrestlers from United States Merchant Marine Academy and Centenary University by scores of 3-2 and 2-0, respectively. Seymour finished the regular season with a 17-5 record.
This is the second-consecutive year that the Lakers will be represented at the NCAA Championships. Seymour enters the competition as the eighth Laker to advance in the past decade, with three members of last year’s squad qualifying.
