Softball Suffers Heartbreaking Sweep at Utica

Softball Suffers Heartbreaking Sweep at Utica

The Oswego State softball team was swept in a nonconference doubleheader at Utica College on Wednesday afternoon. Oswego's first loss came 5-4 by way of a heartbreaking walk-off in the 10th inning before dropping a 5-1 contest in the nightcap. The Lakers now hold a 4-10 record on the year while Utica improves to 8-8.

UTICA 5, OSWEGO 4 (10 INN):

Oswego dug itself out of a 2-0 hole in the sixth inning. An Ashley Lyman double down the left field line plated Erin Sweeney to pull the Lakers to within one run. Freshman Jessica Roe then singled in Carly Lawless to knot the tilt at 2-2.

In the first extra frame, the Lakers gained its first lead of the game on a Rebecca Vilchez sacrifice fly to scored Joelle Nesci. In the bottom of the eighth, the Pioneers were able to bring the game back to even and force more innings. The Lakers again grabbed an advantage, this time in the top of the 10th. A pinch-hit groundout by Allison Hallett was enough to bring Nesci home to push Oswego ahead 4-3.

Utica spoiled the Laker bid for a win in the bottom of the 10th, as a two-out double down the right field line scored two for a 5-4 Pioneer victory.

Katie Heselden was the lone Laker with a multiple-hit outing, going 2-for-4 at the dish. Roe, Lyman and Vilchez all finished with a hit and an RBI apiece.

Vilchez took the loss on the mound with 6.1 innings of relief work. The freshman scattered six hits and allowed three runs, only one of which was earned. Roe started the game and went 3.1 innings, also giving up six hits resulting in two earned runs.

UTICA 5, OSWEGO 1:

Although the Lakers scored first off a Vilchez double in the third to plate Sweeney, Utica answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Oswego sprayed nine hits over the tilt but were only able to tally the third-inning run.

Sweeney finished the contest 3-for-4 when stepping in the batter's box with a run scored and a double. Vilchez, Lyman, Roe, Heselden, Melissa Mulvaney and Sarah McCullough each had one hit with Mulvaney joining Vilchez and Sweeney with two-bagger.

Roe suffered the loss in 2.1 innings of action, letting up four runs on four hits and three walks. Vilchez tossed the final 3.2 frames, minimizing damage by spreading around seven hits for only one earned run.

The Lakers' next scheduled game is a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday at Cortland to open the SUNYAC slate.
