The Oswego State women's ice hockey scored two goals in the final period to move past Chatham University 2-0 on Friday night in the Marano Campus Center Arena. With the conference victory, Oswego pushes its win streak to eight games and are 10-2-0 overall and 6-1-0 in ECAC West contests. The loss drops the Cougars to 7-7-0 overall and 2-5-0 in conference action.
After two periods of scoreless play, Oswego found its offensive flow in the final 20 minutes, keeping constant pressure on its opponent. Brianna Rice tried to stuff two pucks in the back of the net but was turned away twice. The goalie attempted to clear the puck but Bailee Goodon intercepted the pass and made the Cougars pay. Goodon ripped a shot from just inside the faceoff circle and tucked it under the crossbar after clearing the goaltender's right shoulder. The goal came at 11:26 to give the Lakers a 1-0 advantage.
Less than a minute later, Ashley Lyman was whistled for a cross-check and it seemed the Cougars might have an opportunity to knot the score. Erika Truschke and Alexa Aramburu had other plans, however, as they teamed up for Oswego's first shorthanded goal of the 2014-15 campaign. Aramburu swung around the back of the net and found Trushcke in front of the crease for a goal. Trushcke's score came with 7:35 to play and added a cushion to the Lakers advantage, upping the total to 2-0.
Bridget Smith played the full 60 minutes in net for the Lakers, facing a bit more pressure with each new period. The senior stopped two shots in the first, six in the second and eight during the third to collect her fourth shutout of the year.
Oswego will return to the ice at 3 p.m. on Saturday to close out the weekend series with the Cougars
