The Oswego County Office for the Aging (OFA) hosted its eighth annual senior picnic on Wednesday, Aug. 19, which welcomed 175 seniors at the Fulton Polish Home.

The picnic was open and free to any Oswego County senior aged 60 or older.

“Our older adults play a vital role in strengthening our communities, and the annual Senior Picnic is a special opportunity to recognize and celebrate all they’ve contributed over the years,” said Oswego County Legislator Michael Solowy, District 23, chairman of the Legislature’s Human Services Committee. “We’re pleased to have had the opportunity to support this event and honor those who have given so much.”

Oswego County OFA Director Sara Sunday added, “This year’s Senior Picnic had our highest attendance yet, which was incredibly exciting. We chose to host the event at the Fulton Polish Home this year to provide a larger, more accessible space for everyone to enjoy. The response was overwhelming, as we reached capacity and even had to start a waitlist. We’re so grateful that so many seniors were able to join us for a wonderful day filled with delicious food, great company and plenty of fun.”

The day’s events included an opening welcome with coffee and donuts, followed by a recognition ceremony of the 2026 Seniors of the Year, James and Karen O’Brien. Attendees also enjoyed playing rounds of bingo with prizes and a lunch of a turkey sandwich on a roll, potato salad, fruit cup and chocolate pudding.

A representative from AURORA of CNY was at the picnic to conduct a presentation promoting independence and opportunities for people with vision or hearing loss. Oswego County Search and Rescue attended to educate seniors about Project Lifesaver, a program that helps locate lost participants who may have Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other conditions that put them at risk of wandering off.

Oswego County Mobility Management partnered with Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) Transportation to offer seniors free transportation to the picnic.

The Legislature’s Human Services Committee oversees the Oswego County Office for the Aging. In addition to Legislator Solowy, committee members include Vice Chairwoman Noelle Salmonsen, District 21; Joseph Arduini, District 22; Mary Ellen Chesbro, District 10; Richard Kline, District 12; Linda Lockwood, District 11; and Ryan Taylor, District 25.
