Campus to Offer Public Recreation, Education, Sports Action This Winter

SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley has extended a Cruisin' the Campus invitation to residents and visitors throughout the community to enjoy family outings from Dec. 21 to Jan. 24 as the college's recreational facilities, athletic events and venues for discovery, fitness, fun and shopping remain open during college students' winter break.

Stanley beckons those in the area to run, hike and swim, as well as to cheer, learn and browse. Many of these opportunities -- from a planetarium visit to an art exhibition -- are free. Children ages 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The planetarium on the second floor of the Richard S. Shineman Center for Science, Engineering and Innovation will offer "The Stars of Winter" at 2 and 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30 and return to a regular weekly schedule at 7 p.m. Sundays with "Back to the Moon & On to Mars!" on Jan. 3, 10, 17 and 24.

The Lakers will provide NCAA action in ice hockey, basketball, wrestling and swimming and diving during Cruisin' the Campus. Hockey and basketball games are ticketed; visit tickets.oswego.edu or call 315-312-3073.

In hockey, the men's team hosts the Pathfinder Bank Oswego Hockey Classic on Jan. 2 and 3 in the Marano Campus Center arena. Adrian will take on Williams at 4 p.m. and Oswego will play Castleton at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2. On Sunday, Jan. 3, Castleton and Oswego will play either Williams or Adrian at 1 and 4 p.m., respectively, depending on who wins the Jan. 2 games. The Laker men also will skate against Utica and Geneseo at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, and Jan. 22, respectively, at the arena. The women's team will play Morrisville at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, and Plattsburgh at 3 p.m. on both Saturday, Jan. 23, and Sunday, Jan. 24, in the arena.

The Lakers basketball teams take on Brockport at 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men on Tuesday, Jan. 12, and Plattsburgh on Friday, Jan. 15. The two teams host Potsdam and Cortland, at 2 p.m. for the women and 4 p.m. for the men, on Saturday, Jan. 16, and Saturday, Jan. 23, respectively.

Oswego wrestles Brockport at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, in Max Ziel Gymnasium, while the men's and women's swimming and diving teams take on Buffalo State at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, in Laker Pool. Both events offer free admission.

Recreational opportunities abound, outdoors and in. Rice Creek Field Station will host a story hour at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, and a naturalist-led Rice Creek Ramble at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23. Snowshoes are optional, weather permitting, for the hike.

Rice Creek/Fallbrook trail tours are available 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, from Monday, Dec. 28, to Thursday, Jan. 21, excluding Thursday, Dec. 31, and Monday, Jan. 18. The trails themselves are open dawn to dusk. Rice Creek's field station will be open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, Dec. 28 to Jan. 22, excluding Jan. 1 and 18.

Ice skating at Marano Campus Center arena will open noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec, 26, Monday, Dec. 28, and Wednesday, Dec. 30; 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29; and 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sundays, Dec. 27, Jan. 10, Jan. 17 and Jan. 24. Admission fee is $3; skate rental is $2.

Lee Hall's gym -- visitors should bring dry sneakers -- opens from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 28 to 30, then 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from Monday, Jan. 4, to Friday, Jan. 22 (except on Monday, Jan. 18). The pool in Lee Hall will open 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from Monday, Jan. 4, to Friday, Jan. 22, excluding Monday, Jan. 18.

The track in Romney Field House beckons runners and walkers from 9 a.m. to noon weekdays from Dec. 21 to Jan. 3, excluding Dec. 25. The track will open 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. weekdays from Monday, Jan. 4, to Friday, Jan. 22. Participants should bring dry sneakers.

The College Store at Marano Campus Center will open 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2; 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 4, 11 and 18, as well as Thursdays, Jan. 14 and 21, and Friday, Jan. 8. Friday hours on Jan. 15 are 1 to 9 p.m. and on Jan 22, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A free art exhibition titled "Matter and Memory -- That Which Remains: A Dialogue of the American Industrial Landscape" by Carolyn Mazzucca continues through Jan. 8 at Oswego State Downtown, corner of West First and Bridge streets in Oswego. The Oswego artist creates works on paper and gathers inspiration from forgotten industrial landscapes of North America.
