Field Hockey Falls Despite Charap`s 24 Saves

OS Field Hockey

The Oswego State field hockey team was down by nationally-ranked Cortland 6-0 in SUNYAC action Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium White field. Oswego falls to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in conference action while the No. 20 Red Dragons improved to 12-2, 6-0. The game was the 15th annual Dragon Sword game between the two programs.

For the Lakers, freshman goalie Sarita Charap registered a career-high 24 saves, beating her previous mark of 13 which we set in two different games this season. Charap is currently ranked 10th in the nation in save percentage (.838) and 48th in saves per game (7.33). Sophomore Corinne Kimmelman and freshman Emily Brockwell each recorded a defensive save for Oswego.

Sophomore Alexa Sanzone led Cortland with two goals, Junior Jillian Vogl and sophomore Gabby Stein each contributed one goal and one assist. Senior Abigail Wentlent and junior Sara O'Brien tallied one goal apiece, and freshman Victoria Dean collected an assist.

Wentlent gave Cortland the lead nine minutes, 23 seconds into the game, converting a penalty stroke into the upper left of the goal after Charap covered the ball in the circle. Stein made it a 2-0 game at 13:42 with a deflection at the left post before Vogl scored an unassisted goal on a shot through traffic that snuck inside the right post at 17:44.

O'Brien increased Cortland's advantage to 4-0 with a one-time shot on a loose ball right in front at 23:43, and Sanzone connected on her first goal of the game 2:44 before the half when she knocked in her own rebound after Brockwell made a defensive save on her initial shot.

Sanzone completed the scoring in the game with just over five minutes left in regulation. Dean sent a pass into the circle where Sanzone deflected the ball out of midair and under the crossbar for her eighth goal of the season.

Oswego will wrap up its regular season at 1 p.m. on Saturday when Geneseo comes to campus. The Lakers will recognize their seniors prior to the game.
