Lakers Split; Vilchez Hits Walk Off Double in Win

The Oswego State softball team split its third day of competition at the PFX Athletics Spring Games on Wednesday morning. It opened with tough 4-3 loss in the first game against Southwestern University before walking off 6-5 against Concordia University (Wisc.) in the latter game.

SOUTHWESTERN 4, OSWEGO 3:

After tying the game in the top of the seventh at 3-3, Southwestern got its leadoff runner on base via an error. Later in the inning, a single drove in the unearned run for the Pirates to steal the victory.
Six Lakers had a hit against the Pirates, led by Rebecca Vilchez and Joelle Nesci, who each drove in a run. Rounding out the six Oswego players with a hit were Erin Sweeney, Ashley Lyman, Allison Hallett and Gabriella Vertuccio.

On the mound, Jessica Roe started and took a no-decision in four innings of work. The freshman scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs before Vilchez relieve her in the fifth. Vilchez suffered the loss even though she did not allow an earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.

OSWEGO 6, CONCORDIA 5:

Oswego never held a lead until the game's final at-bat when Vilchez doubled with the Lakers down a run to walk-off by scoring Sweeney and Katie Heselden. The Lakers entered the inning trailing 5-2 and immediately got two singles from Roe and Nesci. Sarah McCullough moved both runners into scoring position with a ground out to first base in the next at-bat. Oswego would not surrender another out to Concordia, as Heselden single to plate Roe, Sweeney doubled to score Nesci and Vilchez closed it out with the aforementioned two-bagger.

At the plate, Sweeney and Vertuccio paced the Lakers with 2-for-3 days and an RBI each. Heselden also had an RBI while Vilchez had the team-high by driving in two.

Roe had her first victory of the year and her career in the circle, tossing 1.2 innings in relief to the tune of three hits and one earned run. The freshman relieved Vilchez after 5.1 innings on the rubber. Vilchez spreading seven hits and allowing four runs, only three of which were earned.

Next on the slate in Florida is Bethel University at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Following Bethel on Thursday, Oswego will face Ripon College at 3:30 p.m.
