Lakers Sweep Cards; Extend Win Streak to 11

Lakers Sweep Cards; Extend Win Streak to 11

The nationally-ranked Oswego State baseball team swept the host Cardinals of Plattsburgh in a Saturday afternoon SUNYAC doubleheader. Oswego, ranked No. 7 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and No. 9 in the most recent D3baseball.com poll, are now 19-3 overall, 6-2 in the conference and are currently sporting a 11-game winning streak. Plattsburgh is now 3-18 on the year and 1-6 in conference play.

GAME ONE – Oswego 12, Plattsburgh 1:

Oswego opened the game with a four-run first inning and never looked back. Wes Randall led Oswego with three hits while Eric Hamilton, Jordan Giller and Mike Dellicarri each had two. Hamilton paced the team with three RBI while Myles Kutscher drove in two. Also finishing with an RBI were Randall, Matt Capobianco, Giller, Dellicarri, John Barnes and Robert Donnelly.

Hamilton, Kutscher, Giller and Barnes all had extra-base hits, each coming in the form of a double. Heading those to cross the plate were Brian Hamilton and Dellicarri – with three runs scored each – and Kutscher, reaching home twice.

On the mound, Tim Cronin improved to 4-1 with six innings of work, allowing no runs and just three hits on 70 pitches. Bobby Zywicki and John-Michael Guarino combined for two scoreless and hitless innings in relief while Matt Zakala allowed one run in the ninth on a hit and a walk.

GAME TWO – Oswego 3, Plattsburgh 0:

The Lakers scored a single run in three separate innings to capture the sweep. Barnes started it off with a triple to right center in the second inning, scoring Giller. Giller reached on a single to left before swiping second base. In the following inning, Kutscher grounded out with one out and the bases chucked, scoring Randall. Randall and E. Hamilton reached on infield singles while B. Hamilton was in between the pair of hits, getting plunked to claim first base. Oswego's final tally came all from E. Hamilton, who led off the sixth frame with a triple before crossing the plate on a wild pitch.

All the visiting team needed in terms of pitching was Robert Donnelly, who threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout against the Cardinals. The sophomore struck out eight batters, walked zero and needed just 87 pitches to go the distance.

Oswego and Plattsburgh will square off again on Sunday for a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
