Oswego outlasts Keuka in thrilling match

The Oswego State volleyball team went the distance Tuesday night, Oct. 1, to outlast Keuka College 3-2 in Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego's win move the squad to 12-9 on the year while the Storm falls to 9-5.

The Lakers saved its best for last, cruising out to an 8-2 lead in the final set and keep a sizable advantage throughout. Oswego would take the decisive set 15-9 on its way to the match victory.

Megan Russell led the way in the match with 13 kills, two digs and two blocks. Stephanie Bailey also filled the stat sheet with 11 kills, six blocks and two digs.

Lauren Edwards and Lindsey Champitto shared assisting duties, with Edwards finishing with 23 while Champitto totaled 21. Champitto also led the team with 22 digs while Sabrina Sutton added 20.

In the first set, Keuka got off to a quick start, taking a 22-11 lead before Oswego took a timeout. The Lakers fought back to close the gap to within a few points before the Storm clinched the set 25-21.

Oswego wouldn't stay down for long, battling back from a smaller deficit in the second set, capped by a Russell kill to knot the score at 25-25. The Lakers went on to take the next two points to tie the match at one set apiece.

The third set saw Oswego carry its momentum throughout, keeping an advantage most of the way for a 25-23 win.

Up 2-1 entering the fourth set, the Lakers and Storm battled point-for-point right through to the end. After Keuka took a 24-21 lead, Oswego battled back with two-straight points. The Storm would get the next point, however, forcing a fifth and decisive set.

The Lakers will return to action at 7 p.m. next Wednesday, Oct. 9, when they host Cazenovia College in a nonconference matchup.
