Oswego Takes Split in Near Sweep of Fredonia

OS Softball The Oswego State softball team took a doubleheader split at Fredonia on Friday afternoon at Blue Devils Field. With the win and the loss, Oswego is now 5-14 on the year and 2-10 in SUNYAC play while Fredonia moves to 7-12, 4-6.

GAME ONE – Oswego 9, Fredonia 4:

Oswego used two different comebacks in the first game of the doubleheader to down the Blue Devils. The Lakers trailed 1-0 after the first inning but put up three runs in the second to take their first lead. Fredonia answered with three of its own in the bottom of the frame to steal back the lead at 4-3.

The visiting squad would not be outdone, posting three runs again in the top of the fourth to earn the lead again, this time for good. Oswego would add a single run in each of the last three innings to make the final score of 9-4.

Deanna Apps led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and the Lakers lone stolen base. Dana Taglioni and Katie Bredin each ended the game with two hits, a run scored and a RBI.

Ashley Lyman made her one hit count as she smashed a three-run homer in the fourth to give the Lakers a lead for good.

Alexis Nasca and Melissa Mulvaney had one hit and one RBI apiece, with Mulvaney also scoring once herself. Sammie Schroeter also had a hit, crossing the plate twice while driving in a run. Rounding out the Lakers' hits was Laura Kahn, who went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Alexandria Connelly earned the win in a relief effort, going the final five innings in one-hit fashion, allowing no runs while fanning five batters.

GAME TWO – Fredonia 5, Oswego 4:

The comeback effort belonged to Fredonia in the nightcap, as the Lakers were unable to maintain a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Fredonia led off the bottom of the seventh with a hit but Oswego quickly induced a fly out and a ground out. The third out proved to be elusive for the Lakers, as the Blue Devils used a walk, two singles and an error to manufacture three runs and steal the win.

Oswego had scored runs in the second and fourth inning with Fredonia matching in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to head to the final inning knotted at 2-2. The Lakers then took the lead in the top of the seventh when Apps doubled with two outs and Nasca followed with a home run to take a 4-2 advantage.

Connelly started the game and last four innings, giving up just four hits and two runs before being replaced by Nasca. Nasca took the loss in 2.2 innings of work, surrendering three runs on three hits, only two of which were earned.

Schroeter had another solid outing at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored to pace the Lakers. Taglioni, Apps and Bredin all finished with two hits as Bredin and Taglioni drove in a run apiece as well.

Oswego will take to the diamond again at 12 p.m. on Saturday as it completes its four-game SUNYAC weekend with a doubleheader at Buffalo State.
