Oswego Women's Ice Hockey Pushes No. 3 Elmira to the Brink

OS Hockey The Oswego State women`s ice hockey team took nationally-ranked Elmira College to the brink on Saturday afternoon, eventually falling 2-1 in overtime to the Soaring Eagles. Oswego's loss sets the team record back to 10-6-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the ECAC West while Elmira improves to 13-3-1, 8-0-0.

The Lakers were the beneficiaries of tremendous goaltending by Tori Trovato all game long. Trovato stopped a career-high 38 shots on the day and allowed just one goal in regulation to the No. 3 Soaring Eagles. The sophomores play allowed Oswego to keep the game close throughout despite being outshot 40-13.

With the third period time winding down and the Lakers trailing 1-0, Olivia Boersen fought for a puck on the offensive end. The senior was tripped up on the play but battled while lying on the ice, forcing a pass to Leslie Jarvis. Jarvis was wide open in the center of the ice and capitalized on the situation, firing a score past the Elmira goaltender with exactly 1:00 showing on the clock. Each team called timeouts in the final minute of regulation but Jarvis' goal pushed the game to extra time.

Oswego nearly survived a penalty in the overtime period, but with one second left in the power-play, Elmira was able to net a goal and escape with the 2-1 victory. The tally came with 1:07 left to play in the game.

Elmira's first goal was also of the power-play variety, again scoring as the opportunity reached its final ticks. At 11:46 of the second period with just eight seconds remaining on the power-play, a Soaring Eagle sent a pass in front of the net that a teammate was able to deflect past Trovato.

Oswego will return to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday when Stevenson University comes to the Campus Center for Pink the Rink Weekend.
