The Oswego State wrestling team had a strong showing by several individuals as it placed fourth at the ECWC Championships – hosted by Cortland on Saturday afternoon. For their performances, Jake DelDuca, Isaac Mathews, Hunter Howland, Alex Herringshaw, Troy Seymour, Jeff Lombardi, Chris Marchena, Kade Andrews and Joey Bush were named All-Conference team members.
Seymour was the highlight of the afternoon, as the junior captured the conference title in the 174-pound weight class. He went 4-0 on the day, including two decisions in his first and last matches while sandwiching a pair of tech falls in between. Seymour is currently ranked eighth nationally in the 174 weight class.
A pair of runner-up finishes were achieved by Oswego as well, first from Howland at 125 pounds. Howland went 2-1 on the day, with his quarterfinal and semifinal wins coming by way of pin. His only loss came at the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds in the country (Jonathan Haas of Brockport). Howland's sparring partner, DelDuca captured fourth place in the same weight class. DelDuca went 3-2 on the day but ran into Haas in the semifinal to move to the wrestle back bracket. The sophomore's wins came by major decision (15-6), 4-3 decision and a fall at 4:58.
The Lakers' other second place finisher was Herringshaw at 165 pounds. Herringshaw won his first two matches by fall (1:02) and technical fall (15-0) before facing third-ranked Nick Velez from Ithaca in the championship bout. The freshman held his own against the nationally-ranked competitor, losing by a close 3-2 decision.
Andrews finished third in the 285-pound class by coming out victorious in a sudden victory situation in the quarterfinal match before picking up another win (4-2 decision) in the consolation semifinal.
Joining DelDuca as a fourth-place finisher was Lombardi at 184 pounds. Lombardi went 2-2 with his triumphs coming by way of 14-3 major decision and fall at 5:51 in the consolation semifinal.
Bush and Mathews both finished in fifth in the 157 and 165 pound weight classes, respectively. Bush went 4-2 on the day with three wins by decision and one by pin. Mathews went 3-2 on the day with a pair of decisions and a pin. One of his losses came at the hands of nationally-ranked and eventual 165 champion Velez.
Rounding out the All-Conference nods for Oswego was Marchena at 184, earning one win on the day by 4-2 decision.
The Lakers will now have a week off before returning to the mats at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational.
