The Oswego State softball team swept Buffalo State in a conference doubleheader at home on Tuesday afternoon.
Oswego walked-off 4-3 in the first game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth before shutting out the Bengals 3-0 in the nightcap. The Lakers are now 11-15 on the year but – but more importantly – improve to 7-3 in league action. Buffalo Sate drops to 9-18 overall and 5-5 in SUNYAC play with the pair of losses.
OSWEGO 4, BUFFALO STATE 3:
Trailing by a run with two outs and two on in the bottom of the ninth, Rebecca Vilchez drilled a walk-off double to left center, driving in teammates Erin Sweeney and Sarah McCullough. McCullough scored with ease from second base and Sweeney barreled around third base with a green light from head coach Abby Martin, beating the cut-off throw from the shallow outfield.
Oswego led the game early, as senior Ashley Lyman blasted a two-run homer in the first inning, plating Vilchez and herself. Buffalo State was able to score twice in the third to knot the game before taking the lead with a solo shot in the sixth.
Vilchez improved to 7-4 on the year with a complete-game win on the rubber. The freshman scattered six hits and allowed three runs – only two of which were earned – before knocking the game-clinching hit in the seventh.
Lyman and Vilchez had nearly identical batting lines, each finish with two hits, two RBI, a run scored and a walk. McCullough and Jessica Roe had a hit apiece to account for the rest of the Lakers' six hits.
OSWEGO 3, BUFFALO STATE 0:
The Lakers did not allow a run in the second game of the doubleheader, as Jessica Roe threw 5.1 innings of three-hit softball. Vilchez tossed a perfect final 1.2 frames, earning a save while Roe collected the win to improve to 4-9 on the year.
Roe helped herself in the first inning, doubling to center field to force Vilchez and Sweeney home for 2-0 advantage. Oswego's final run came in the next inning, as Melissa Mulvaney reached home via a fielding error on a Sweeney ground ball to first.
At the plate, Roe paced the squad with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI. Sweeney and McCullough had a base knock apiece to round out the Laker hitting.
Oswego will continue conference action for its next contest, slated for a 3 p.m. home doubleheader with Oneonta on Friday.
