Sortino's Season-High Pushes Lakers to Victory

OS Basketball

The visiting Oswego State men's basketball team downed Fredonia 65-53 on Friday afternoon, claiming a win over its conference foe. The victory elevates Oswego to 13-6 overall and keeps it tied for the SUNYAC top spot at 9-3. Fredonia's loss drops it to 2-17, 1-12.

Guard Kyle Covley got Oswego on the scoreboard by sinking a 3-pointer to put the Lakers up 3-2 in the early goings. The Lakers began firing on all cylinders, scoring 12 unanswered points in large part to sophomore Brian Sortino and his seven points in just a few minutes of action. The 12-0 run proved to be the decider, as the Blue Devils fought from behind for the majority of the contest.

Sortino finished with a season-best 29 points, sinking 11-of-17 (64.7%) shot attempts on the night. The Fairport native added two steals on the night while dropping three 3-pointers on the night as well, aiding the Lakers to a solid 6-for-16 (37.5%) from behind the arc.

Covley anticipated and broke up passes all evening, as the 6-foot-2 junior collected a team-high three steals to go along with his 10 points. As a collective unit, Oswego managed to create more turnovers, recording 8 steals to Fredonia's one.

The Lakers outrebounded their conference-foe 47-36, making it difficult for Fredonia to surmount a comeback. Center Mark Candelario handled the majority of the rebounding duties, as he was able to corral 11 Blue Devil misses.

Oswego will play its second road conference matchup in as many days when it returns for a 2 p.m. bout on Saturday with Buffalo State.
