Residents at Bishop's Commons have teaming-up with Riley Elementary School 4th grader's and together are working on yearlong writing project that will culminate in a storybook detailing the interests, activities and some personal history of residents, as composed by the students.
Students visit Bishop's Commons once a month to interview their resident partner and take what information they learn during the interview to compose a new chapter in the storybook. At the completion of the writing project at the end of the school year, students will present their resident partner with the storybook they composed.
Oswego Rotary hosted Oswego High School seniors Kerrigan Cummins, Elizabeth Baker and Tara Stacy recently. The students represent an elite group of seniors who are at the top of their class academically. The Rotary club sponsors scholarships annually and bi-weekly host students at their meetings. Also pictured are Board member Randy Zeigler and club President Sue Witmer.
A free 2-part workshop called Photoshop Elements for Artists will be offered at the Oswego Public Library on Saturday, February 15th and Saturday February 22nd from noon to 3 pm. The workshop will be led by artist and teacher Bill DeMott in the Library Learning Center.
Oswego Rotary hosted Melanie Proper from the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County recently. Ms. Proper is a Mental Health Counselor at the CAC. The Center is a safe, child-friendly site for the investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse. The CAC partners with several local agencies to protect children and aid in the prevention and treatment of traumatic events in a child's life. The artistic impressions of several Oswego High School students were recognized in the annual Central New York Scholastic Arts competition.
SUNY Oswego`s Tyler Hall will undergo a $22.2 million rejuvenation starting this summer, welcoming campus and community about a year and a half later to a more approachable, flexible and high-tech home for the performing and fine arts.
The Oswego Public Library will be closed on Monday, February 17 for Presidents' Day. The following evening the Friends of the Library will host a talk by Mike Goldych entitled Enriched Uranium Fission -- Iran and the Nuclear Program at 6:30 PM in the Library's Community Room. Join Mr. Goldych as he shares from his studies of nuclear power at a level you can understand. Refreshments will be served by the Friends.
One month later, on Tuesday, March 18, another talk will be held in the Library's Community Room. Join the Friends of the Library at 6:30 PM as they host Jim Farfaglia talking about Muck Farms of Oswego County. Jim is the author of "Of The Earth," a compilation of oral histories garnered from Oswego County muck farmers. We have about 4,000 acres of muck land, an organic-rich soil that produces high-quality vegetables. The book includes narration by muck farmers, their families, neighbors and agricultural support staff on how the mucks were formed and modernized and why living a muck-farm life is a unique experience.
