Errors hurt Oswego State Baseball in 2-1 loss at New Paltz

OS Baseball A day after beating the top-ranked team in the nation, the Oswego State baseball team (10-7, 3-2 SUNYAC) lost the first of a three-game weekend series to New Paltz (7-12, 4-4 SUNYAC), 2-1.

New Paltz struck first after a scoreless three and a half innings to start the contest, scoring an unearned run on the Lakers and pitcher Dan Erne (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.). Alex Jurcynzski (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.) launched a home run over the left field fence in the next half inning to even the score at 1-1.  The Hawks added another unearned run off Erne in the bottom half of the fifth and used strong pitching and defense to hold on for the one-run victory as Oswego State failed to have a runner reach second base in its final four at-bats.

Scott Buniak (Jr., Clifton Park, N.Y.), Brian Hamilton (So., Liverpool, N.Y.), Michael Mascari (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.), and Jurcynzski each logged a hit in the loss.  Erne went the distance, allowing seven hits, no walks, and two unearned runs with four strikeouts in the hard-luck loss. Chris Pyz recorded the complete-game win for New Paltz, scattering four hits, striking out seven and walking one.

Oswego State picks up action with a doubleheader Saturday, April 6, in New Paltz starting at noon.
