Mackenzie Kjerstad (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), a junior on the women's lacrosse team, and Tim Van Hine Jr. (Apalachin, N.Y.), a sophomore on the men's tennis team, have been named the Oswego State Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 7.
Kjerstad finished the week with five goals and two assists during a week that saw Oswego State defeat then-19th ranked Geneseo, 13-12 in overtime, and fall to Cortland. Kjerstad stopped a five-goal Blue Knight scoring streak in the second half that put Geneseo in front by three with her second goal of the game to start the Laker comeback. She later scored the eventual game-winning goal on a free-position shot 1:30 into overtime. Kjerstad also won five draw controls against Geneseo. Against fourth-ranked Cortland, she scored two of the Lakers' five goals.
Van Hine, Jr. registered victories in doubles and singles against Daemen to guide the Lakers to a 5-4 victory on Saturday night. The sophomore partnered with Dillon Corbett (Sr., Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) at second doubles, as the pair erased a 7-3 deficit and saved three match points in a 9-8 (7-0) triumph. The comeback gave Oswego State a 2-1 lead entering singles play. In his singles match at the No. 2 flight, Van Hine, Jr. turned in a critical 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win to knot the match score up at 4-4. Van Hine, Jr. also won his match at No. 3 singles over Utica on Wednesday.
