The Oswego State men`s tennis team won its second-consecutive match by grinding out a 5-4 victory at Utica College on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Lakers improve to 3-3 on the season while the Pioneers drop to 1-2.
The win marked the Lakers first triumph over Utica since 2006 and is the team's first winning streak since they capped the 2012-13 campaign with wins over Keystone and Keuka Colleges.
Oswego gained the advantage on the doubles side of the match, taking two of the three possible points. At first doubles, Ben Weiss and Mike Owens combined for an 8-3 win over Ignacio Mascolo and Daniel Fadden.
After dropping second doubles, the Lakers bounced back as Max McCune and Sam Moores went on to take down their opponents easily, 8-1.
The two teams battled on the singles slate, as each squad came away with three points. Oswego's points came courtesy of Tim Van Hine, Jr. , Spencer Thorn and Justin D'Antionio.
Van Hine took third singles over Fadden in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-3. At fourth singles, Thorn was able to down Ryan Valle in two sets, 6-1, 6-2. Finally D'Antonio locked up sixth singles for the second-straight match, defeating Phil Pham 6-0, 6-1.
Oswego will return to the courts at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday when it hosts the Cardinals of St. John Fisher College.
