Mexico Academy & Central Schools is pleased to welcome Matthew McGiff as the new Assistant Principal at Mexico High School.

McGiff is a face many will know as he brings more than a decade of educational experience in-district to the role, having served students in a variety of capacities throughout his career. He began as a special education teacher, working in resource, consultant teacher and self-contained classroom settings before taking on leadership roles as Special Education Department Leader, Dean of Students and Interim Assistant Principal.

His experience also extends beyond the traditional school year. McGiff has spent many years supporting the district's ASAP after-school activities program and Extended School Year (ESY) summer program as both a teacher and administrative intern. This summer, he is serving as Principal of the ESY program, continuing his commitment to supporting students and staff year-round.

Outside the classroom, McGiff has coached varsity track and field and cross country, while also advising the district's award-winning Rocket Club, helping students develop teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills through hands-on learning.

Although he is a graduate of Oswego High School, McGiff's connection to Mexico began early in his career through student teaching and substitute teaching in the district before joining the faculty full time. He earned a bachelor's degree in Speech Communication from SUNY Potsdam, a master’s degree in education with certifications in Special Education and English Language Arts from Le Moyne College, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership from Le Moyne College.

"What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to support every student who walks through the doors of Mexico High School," McGiff said. "Whether their next step is college, the military, the workforce or another path, I want every student to leave Mexico with the skills, confidence and character to be successful."

McGiff believes every student deserves a safe, welcoming and supportive learning environment where strong relationships, high expectations and compassion help students thrive both academically and personally.

"I feel incredibly fortunate to continue serving the Mexico community in this new capacity," he said. "I'm honored to have the opportunity to give back to a community that has welcomed me throughout my career."
