OSWEGO COUNTY – The Syracuse Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Ontario Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, joined forces with the Half-Shire Historical Society and Oswego County Historian Debra Allen for the dedication of a William Pomeroy Foundation Patriot Burial Marker in Redfield.
The ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Redfield Village (Myrtle) Cemetery on county Route 17, just south of Yerdon Drive.
The program honors the following Revolutionary War soldiers interred in the cemetery:
- Samuel Brooks (1741-1818)
- Samuel Farmer (1758-1838)
- Amos Johnson (1760-1858)
- William Lord (1760-1840)
- Allyn Seymour (1757-1828)
- Samuel Strong (1760-1821)
- Eli Strong (1755-1825)
- Seth Warren (1740-1835)
- Samuel Warren (1761-1844)
- Joshua Wood (1766-1845)
New grave markers will also be dedicated to Seth and Samuel Warren and Joshua Wood.
Other honored guests expected to be present include Paula and Tasha Molner of GraveGeek Volunteers, Inc., a not-for-profit group of cemetery enthusiasts, which has worked on gravestone cleaning and some repair in the Redfield cemetery. Representatives of the Oswego County American 250th Commission will also be at hand.
The Patriot Burials Marker Program holds special meaning to Bill Pomeroy, who is a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution. His lifelong passion for history and personal experience visiting historical markers with his father inspired the creation of the Foundation’s first marker program. When Pomeroy discovered that New York State had stopped funding its marker program decades ago, he launched the Foundation’s New York-based program to help fill the gap. That effort became the springboard for the Foundation’s range of marker grant programs, including patriot burials.
