The Oswego State men`s lacrosse team's comeback effort fell short 11-9 to Clarkson University on Tuesday afternoon on the South Athletic Field. Oswego`s loss drops its season mark to 4-3 while the Golden Knights improve to 5-3.
The Lakers got on the board first as Jimmy Cordon scored a goal just 1:14 into the contest for his 10th tally of the year. Clarkson then scored the game's next four goals, including three in the first period, to own a 4-1 advantage. The Golden Knights held three three-goal leads and two four-goal margins throughout the contest.
Oswego would not fade away, however, as the Lakers put together a furious comeback after Clarkson took a 9-5 advantage with 3:26 to play in the third quarter. Nick Giampaolo started a four-goal spurt for Oswego with a goal that he blasted past the Golden Knights' goalie into the upper 90.
Troy Crevier, who was 19-for23 at the X on the day, won a faceoff and immediately found Cody Hoose for a goal seven seconds later to make it a 9-7 game with 3:08 left in the third.
Wyatt Russo came up with one of his 17 saves with 29 seconds left in the period, and once Oswego successfully completed its clear, the Lakers called timeout with 13 seconds remaining. The stoppage proved to be wise as Giampaolo was able to find the back of the net to make it a one-goal game heading into the final 15 minutes.
Early in the fourth, Torry Witcher nearly tied the game but his shot careened off the post, allowing Clarkson to gain possession. The Golden Knights did not hold the ball for long, turning it over to Oswego at 13:13. The Lakers worked their offense through until Cody Hoose was able to tie the game at 9-9 with his seventh goal of the year at 12:14.
Oswego was unable to generate another goal the rest of the way while Clarkson tacked on two to escape with the victory.
Giampaolo led the way with four goals while Hoose and Cordon each finished with two. Brady Hoose had the Lakers other tally while Whitcher and Crevier had the two Oswego assists. Crevier paced the team with a career-high 12 ground balls.
Russo, the SUNYAC Goalie of the Week, set a new career-best for the second-straight game with his 17 saves on Clarkson.
Oswego will open conference play with a 4 p.m. contest on Friday when it host the Golden Eagles of Brockport.
