Lakers Split Against Hamilton

Lakers Split Against Hamilton

The Oswego State softball team split its doubleheader on the road against Hamilton on Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers’ bats were hot in game one, winning by a score of 11-7, but Oswego fell in game two, 4-0. With the win and loss, the Lakers move to 7-5 on the season.

In the first game, Oswego jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Back to back singles by Gabriella Vertuccio and Carly Lawless drove in three runs for the Lakers.

The next inning, the Lakers were at it again. First, Erin Sweeney stole home to put Oswego’s fourth run on the board. The next batter, Sarah McCullough, ripped a triple down the left field line to knock in Angela Frampton and put the Lakers up 5-1.

Two innings later the Lakers added another two runs onto their lead, first capitalizing on a Hamilton error and later with another single by Vertuccio.

In the fifth inning, the Hamilton pitcher issued back to back walks to Claire Hewitt and Madelana Wrubel, and Sweeney singled to load the bases for Rebecca Vilchez. Vilchez delivered with a single to center field to drive in Hewitt. Frampton notched a clutch hit as well, doubling in two more runs.

Oswego’s final run came in the sixth. Wrubel was patient at the plate again, getting on base with a walk before moving into scoring position on Sweeney’s third single of the day. Vilchez then sent her home with a single to right field.

Vilchez started on the mound for the Lakers in game one, earning the win. The sophomore gave up four earned runs in seven innings.

In game two, Frampton pitched for Oswego. The junior issued three earned runs in six innings of work, striking out four Hamilton batters.

The Laker bats were quiet against the Hamilton starter in game two, who pitched all seven innings. Vertuccio led the team with two hits, earning a walk as well.

Oswego begins SUNYAC play in its next doubleheader, hosting Cortland at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday for its home opener.
